342 5033 Here is the weekly recap for all of the teams in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of the NCAA.    Clemson opens season with a 37-14 blowout over Middle <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Tennessee</st1:place></st1:state>. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> C.J. Spiller started the game with a 96-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff, and the Tigers rolled the rest of the game thanks to a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown by Jacoby Ford, who also had a 43-yard touchdown reception, and some stellar defense. Spiller also had a 50-yard punt return in the second quarter, which set up a field goal.  <o:p> </o:p> Middle <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Tennessee</st1:state></st1:place> struggled all game with Clemson's defensive speed. They did not get into Clemson territory in the first half and fell to 1-7 all-time against ACC opponents. <o:p> </o:p> Clemson’s freshman quarterback Kyle Parker showed that he has what it takes with a strong arm along with scrambling ability with decent speed. Parker, an all-ACC performer in baseball, is the first freshman quarterback to start a season opener for Clemson since 1945. He finished 9-20 passing with 159 yards, two TDs and no interceptions. He had numerous passes that were right on the money which were dropped by the receivers during the game. <o:p> </o:p> His backup, the more experienced Willy Korn, came for two series during the game and fumbled on his first series, leading to a Chris McCoy 68-yard touchdown return, and  then threw an interception on his second series. <o:p> </o:p> The Tigers defense flexed its muscles throughout the game. They had two interceptions and allowed minus 9 yards rushing in the first half. <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Wake</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Forest</st1:placetype> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Falls</st1:placetype></st1:place> 24-21 to Baylor. <o:p></o:p>   After <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Wake</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Forest</st1:placetype></st1:place>'s quarterback, Riley Skinner, threw his second interception, Baylor took a 17-7 lead in the third quarter. Baylor pulled ahead by 17 points later in the third on a halfback option play when he caught a lateral and then threw a 33-yard touchdown.    Skinner connected with Andrew Parker for a 5-yard touchdown with 3:57 left in the game to bring <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Wake</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Forest</st1:placetype></st1:place> to within 24-21 and they could not score any more.  <o:p> </o:p> Skinner, who currently is the all-time leader in the ACC in completion percentage, completed 20-31 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw three interceptions. <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">North Carolina</st1:place></st1:state> takes Citadel to the cleaners winning 40-6.<o:p></o:p>   Quarterback T.J. Yates threw two touchdown passes in the first half, and No. 21 North Carolina routed The Citadel 40-6 on Saturday night. The Tar Heels had 375 yards of total offense as running back Shaun Draughn rushed for 118 yards.   Yates was 9-20 passing for 114 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">North Carolina</st1:state></st1:place> had a 261-30 yard advantage rushing the ball. <o:p> </o:p> Da'Norris Searcy also returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown. In the second quarter, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">North Carolina</st1:state></st1:place> scored on four straight possessions. <o:p> </o:p> The halftime stat sheet was heavily favoring <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">North Carolina</st1:place></st1:state> as they led 23-0; they outgained the Citadel 204-73, held a 108-16 rushing yard advantage and also forced four turnovers. <o:p> </o:p> This was a complete beat down from the Tar Heels. Yates spread the ball around to six players who had a reception.   <o:p> </o:p>  <o:p></o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Boston</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">College</st1:placetype></st1:place> dominates Northeastern 54-0. <o:p></o:p>   Montel Harris scored on a 48-yard run on <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Boston</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">College</st1:placetype></st1:place>'s first play from scrimmage, and the Eagles fun did not stop there. Harris took the handoff from Tuggle and went left, breaking a couple of tackles before racing to the end zone. <o:p> </o:p> Harris ran for 104 yards on the ground and had three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving in the first half.  Quarterbacks Justin Tuggle and David Shinskie failed to settle the BC QB competition as both of them had good games. Tuggle was 3-5 passing for 56 yards, and Shinskie was 7-10 passing for 110 yards. <o:p> </o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Boston</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">College</st1:placetype></st1:place> outgained Northeastern in total offense 441 yards to 131. <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Duke loses a close one 26-24 to <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Richmond</st1:place></st1:city>. <o:p></o:p>   Blue Devils fell to the defending FCS national champion. Tyler Kirchoff rushed for a touchdown and blocked a punt for another score to help <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Richmond</st1:city></st1:place> defeat Duke. <o:p> </o:p> <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Richmond</st1:place></st1:city>, who are reigning champions of the Football Championship Subdivision, defeated the Blue Devils in their season opening game for the second time in four years. <o:p> </o:p> Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis was 34 of 55 for 350 yards and two touchdowns for Duke, but it was not enough. The Blue Devils lost their opener for the sixth time in the last seven years. They missed two field goals and had the blocked punt that set up an easy score for <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Richmond</st1:place></st1:city>. <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Virginia</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st="on">Falls</st1:placename></st1:place> falls 26-14 to William & Mary. <o:p></o:p>   B.W. Webb had three interceptions and William & Mary shut down <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Virginia</st1:state></st1:place>'s new spread offense in a 26-14 win. <o:p> </o:p> William & Mary forced seven turnovers and Webb returned his third interception 50 yards for a touchdown. In trying to get something going, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Virginia</st1:state></st1:place> used all three of their quarterbacks, but none of them could get the ball rolling for the offense. <o:p> </o:p> Quarterback R.J. Archer of William & Mary completed 23 of 45 passes and rushed for 46 yards on nine carries. <o:p> </o:p> It looked like it might be a blow out for <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Virginia</st1:state></st1:place> early in the game.  On <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Virginia</st1:state></st1:place>'s first play from scrimmage, they had a three yard pass which they ran 34 yards untouched for a touchdown, and the crowd at Scott Stadium was going crazy. <o:p> </o:p> But William & Mary came right back and tied it on an Archer's 5-yard touchdown pass.  Virginia only had one other highlight the whole game was an excellent drive where quarterback Sewell went 5-5 for 45 yards and rushed the ball four times for 35 yards leading to a touchdown which made the score 14-7. <o:p> </o:p> From that point on, it was all William & Mary.     <st1:state w:st="on">Maryland</st1:state> gets smoked 52-13 by <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">California</st1:place></st1:state>.   Quarterback Kevin Riley had a career-high four touchdown passes for <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">California</st1:state></st1:place>, who jumped to a 45-6 lead and never looked back. <o:p> </o:p> It was <st1:state w:st="on">Maryland</st1:state>’s most lopsided season-opening loss since the first football game the school ever played, a 50-0 loss to <st1:city w:st="on">St. John’s</st1:city> of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Annapolis</st1:city></st1:place> in 1892. <o:p> </o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Maryland</st1:state></st1:place> was supposed to be the team with the defense scheme that brought a lot of pressure and caused havoc in the backfield after bringing in defensive coordinator Dan Brown and his blitzing schemes. Nevertheless, <st1:state w:st="on">Cal</st1:state> moved through the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Maryland</st1:state></st1:place> defense with ease and went over the 500-yard mark halfway through the fourth quarter. <o:p> </o:p> It was <st1:state w:st="on">Cal</st1:state> that was applying the constant pressure on <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Maryland</st1:place></st1:state> quarterback Chris Turner, sacking him six times in the game and preventing a Terps touchdown until halfway through the third quarter. <o:p> </o:p> Turner finished the day 17-30 passing for 167 yards.   <o:p> </o:p> Virginia Tech suffers defeat to <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Alabama</st1:place></st1:state> 34-24. <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Virginia Tech played it close for three quarters playing but <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Alabama</st1:state></st1:place>'s superiority could not be stopped in the final quarter. <o:p> </o:p> Score another big season-opening win for <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Alabama</st1:place></st1:state>, who survived a 98-yard kickoff return, two turnovers and numerous foolish penalties, finally showed their muscle in the final quarter for a 34-24 victory Saturday night. <o:p> </o:p> Mark Ingram rushed for 150 yards and put the icing on the cake with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Greg McElroy threw for 230 yards in his first game as <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Alabama</st1:state></st1:place>'s starting quarterback.   <o:p> </o:p> <st1:state w:st="on">Alabama</st1:state> held a staggering 498-155 edge in total yards against Virginia Tech's highly touted defense, but <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Virginia</st1:place></st1:state> led the game 17-16 going into the fourth quarter. <o:p> </o:p> Virginia Tech hung around and made the game close until the fourth quarter. Dyrell Roberts had a 98 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. An interception led to a Virginia Tech field goal. Three costly <st1:state w:st="on">Alabama</st1:state> penalties gave Virginia Tech an additional TD, and another long return along with a personal foul by <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Alabama</st1:state></st1:place> set up a late TD that gave Virginia Tech a chance and kept the game close. <o:p> </o:p> In the end, <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Alabama</st1:place></st1:state> would not be denied, scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns to put the game away.   Virginia Tech came into this season hoping to do more than just be the Atlantic Coast Conference champions for the second year in a row; they wanted to be the team that could contend for the schools first national title. However, to reach that dream Virginia Tech clearly has work to do on offense and its highly rated defense going into the season took an unexpected beating as well. <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Georgia Tech Wins 37-17 over <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Jacksonville</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p>   Georgia Techs powerful ground game was working on all cylinders as they amassed 335 yards rushing in Saturday's win. Jonathan Dwyer ran for two touchdowns in the game including the first play from scrimmage, as he took an option pitch for a 74-yard touchdown. <o:p> </o:p> Dwyer finished with 95 yards rushing on seven carries, including a 5-yard touchdown later in the first quarter. Dwyer did not play at all the entire second half as they had a 31-7 halftime lead. <o:p> </o:p> However, they also fumbled five times and dropped several passes in the game as well. Georgia Tech quarterback, Josh Nesbitt, was 6-11 passing for 141 yards and one touchdown, a Anthony Allen's 26-yard TD catch that made it 37-10 early in the fourth quarter. Demaryius Thomas also caught four passes for 101 yards. <o:p> </o:p> Georgia Tech's halftime lead was padded in the final minute when Jerrard Terrant returned a punt for a 58-yard score, which was their first TD on a punt return in six years. <o:p> </o:p> Georgia Tech finished with 497 total yards in the game. <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> NC State loses defensive battle 7-3 to South Carolina<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> NC state managed just 133 total yards in the game, with all-ACC quarterback Russell Wilson ending with only 74 yards passing. He was under constant pressure from the fast <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">South Carolina</st1:state></st1:place> defenders. <o:p> </o:p> Jamelle Eugene rushed 9 times for 35 yards.   <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">South Carolina</st1:state></st1:place> completed a key third-down pass in the final minutes, which set up a short rushing touchdown for the winning score. <o:p> </o:p> It was a frustrating night for both teams’ offenses, and it gave <st1:state w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">South Carolina</st1:place></st1:state> a second straight season-opening victory against NC State. <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> <st1:city w:st="on">Miami</st1:city> beats <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Florida</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype></st1:place> 38-34<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> All I can say is WOW! The only conference game between two ACC teams turned out to be the game of the game of the week in college football. It was a seesaw battle throughout the game and went all the way down to the last play of the game. It was fourth down, five seconds to go, with <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Florida</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype></st1:place> on the two-yard line and down by four. Once the play was over, for even more dramatics, it had to be reviewed before it was official. <o:p> </o:p> <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Florida</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype></st1:place> had the chance but could not capitalize on the play. Quarterback Christian Ponder rolled to his right and threw a pass that at first glance looked to be caught for the game winning touchdown. It was called incomplete by the officials and the review verified that call. <o:p> </o:p> Quarterback Jacoby Harris of <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Miami</st1:place></st1:city> was 21-34 passing for 386 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. <o:p> </o:p> Quarterback Christian Ponder of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Florida</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype></st1:place> was 24-41 passing for 294 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. <o:p> </o:p> This game had everything, receiving touchdowns, rushing touchdowns, long field goals, a missed extra point, and interception return for a TD, a 63-yard kickoff return by <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Miami</st1:place></st1:city>, and a 51-yard kickoff return by FSU, although neither went for a touchdown.    <o:p> </o:p> If you enjoy offensive football, then this was the game for you. There were 880 total yards gained in this game, 476 yards by <st1:city w:st="on">Miami</st1:city> and 404 yards by <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on">Florida</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st="on">State</st1:placetype></st1:place>. A defensive battle this was certainly not. However, it was extremely exciting and went down to the wire.   76.97.188.228
