Dorsey’s High 5s
Written by Dorsey Levens, Wednesday October 14 2009
In reviewing the2009 NFL season so far, I have decided to share my Top 5 Surprises in the league so far, for the good, the bad, and the ugly. So here are my high fives and low fives so far for the season.
Top 5 Surprises: Individual
1) Cedric Benson (RB Bengals) - Leads the league with 487 yards rushing. Feel-good story considering he was almost out of football 2 years ago.
2) Steve Smith (WR Giants) - Lead the league with 481 yards receiving. Stepping up to the challenge of replacing Plaxico Burress.
3) Dallas Clark (TE Colts) - 3rd in the league receiving with 441 yards. Very impressive for a TE.
4) Kyle Orton (QB Broncos) - The second Bears castaway to make the Top 5; at 5-0 he can't be ignored.
5) Elvis Dumervil (DE Broncos) and Antwan Odon (DE Bengals) - tied for the league lead in sacks at 8.
Top 5 Surprises: Team
1) Denver Broncos - After losing QB Jay Cutler and going through the Brandon Marshall soap opera they find a way to keep on winning.
2) Cincinnati Bengals - Their only loss was to the Broncos on the luckiest last-second play we've seen in a long, long time.
3) New Orleans Saints - Even when QB Drew Brees has an average day, they're finding ways to win with their much improved defense and running game.
4) Tennessee Titans - After starting 10-0 last season and earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, the Titans have yet to win a game.
5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - When defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin left to join his son Lane at the University of Tennessee, he also took the ability to stop anyone with him. The Bucs are 0-9 since his departure.
Top 5 What’s Going On?
1) Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden ranks 44th in the NFL in rushing, QB JaMarcus Russell has a 47.1% passer rating and head coach Tom Cable may be wearing an orange jumpsuit in the near future.
2) Carolina Panthers - RBs D'Angelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are 29th and 45th in the league in rushing after they combined for over 2,000 yards a year ago. WR Steve Smith ranks 36th in receiving and only has 1 TD so far.
3) RBs - Matt Forte (Bears), Ryan Grant (Packers), Brian Westbrook (Eagles), Steve Slaton (Texans), Larry Johnson (Chiefs), Willie Parker (Steelers), Joseph Addai (Colts). Just asking????
4) WRs - Colts rookie Austin Collie ranks No. 36 in receiving yards and he's ahead of Vincent Jackson (Chargers), the aforementioned Steve Smith (Panthers), Derrick Mason (Ravens), Bernard Berrian (
5) Rush Limbaugh - His first question to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would be whether or not he could use a whip on the sidelines if players got a little unruly. Child Please!
