320 3086 Chicago Sun times Journalist Rick Telander's most recent article "Small hitter, big problem" is nothing less of a slanderous article towards Ryan Theriot, the Chicago Cubs shortstop.  Even if the so-called “accusations” were in jest, it was uncalled for and will now forever link this young mans name to steroids. It is a shame, because Theriot has never come across to anyone that he is a cheater.   "The headline could have been written differently," Theriot said. "When you read something like that, it associates you with something you don't want to be associated with." <o:p> </o:p> Theriot told reporters that had he stopped drinking protein shakes in 2005, and stopped doing any kind supplements as well, fearing the wrong ingredient might show in a test. "For me, the risk-reward was never worth it to even take that chance on a protein shake," Theriot said. "My supplements for the last 4-5 years have been Gatorade and water."   Theriot expressed disappointment that his success at the plate this season prodded Telander to write the article in the first place, much less use his name in linking him to steroid use. <o:p> </o:p> Here is the actual excerpt from the article.  <o:p> </o:p> “Sorry, Ryan Theriot, you're a suspect. Forget Manny Ramirez and Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi and Mark McGwire and all the other hulking, accused performance-enhancing drug users.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> You, sir, all 5-11, 175 pounds of you, are doing devious things.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> To wit, Theriot -- no disrespect, but if he's 5-11, I'm 6-12 -- hit two home runs Wednesday night at Wrigley Field against the Padres, giving him five times more home runs in 33 games this year than he hit all last season.<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Brrinnnng! Eee -- ah! Eee-ah! Zzzt! Zzzzt! <o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> That rings the steroid/HGH/ whatever-designer-drug-is-in bell, doesn't it?<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> Sorry, Ryan Theriot, you are a suspect. The whole proposition may be ludicrous. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is. But this is what baseball has wrought.”<o:p></o:p> <o:p> </o:p> In my mind, it is completely slanderous and if Telander had any class at all, he would publicly apologize to Theriot and write another article in his behalf. <o:p> </o:p> "I'm proud of myself throughout my life and my reputation on and off the field," Theriot said. "I've lived my life the right way from day one, and hopefully that overcomes a headline like that. Others make mistakes and you get dragged into it. I kind of laugh a little bit," he said. "I guess everybody is entitled to their own opinion. It's unfortunate, like I said the other day, that it has come to this. But I guess you can write whatever you want to write, and it's up to the readers to formulate their own opinion." <o:p> </o:p> Theriots teammate, pitcher Ryan Dempster said he believed that linking Theriot's name to the steroids issue was reckless journalism, and that Theriot deserved an apology. "I think it's insulting," Dempster said. "I know it's all in fun, and 'Ha, ha, ha,' but in today's game, to me, I think that's just a poor way, because somehow, someway, someone will take that article seriously. A guy like Theriot who plays the game hard and works his butt off doesn't deserve something like that." Cubs Manager Lou Piniella called the accusations "absurd"! "Isn't that crazy?" Piniella said. "Look, when the wind is blowing out at Wrigley Field and you can show some bat speed and get the ball up in the pull field, you're going to get rewarded. Look, if I was clean, I would want to let people know I was clean so if I hit a few home runs people wouldn't look at me like 'Is this guy Popeye, or what?' " Theriot was absolutely insulted by the innuendo that he should not be capable of hitting with power. "Last time I checked, I was a professional athlete who has put up some decent numbers," Theriot said. "I guess anybody can do anything if you set your mind to it. I've always been under that belief. To be honest with you, I feel like I can go out there and pitch if I wanted to, so a few homers here and there, and remember, it's only a few. It's not like I have got 30." At that point, outfielder Reed Johnson walked over and handed Theriot an ice cream bar. "Just one of these a day," Johnson said very seriously. <o:p> </o:p> It embarrasses me that this is what journalism has come to in the world today, when some writers will do or say anything in order to sell a newspaper. <o:p> </o:p> “The Riot” as Theriot is so affectionately called by fans and teammates, had every right to be upset with not only Telander, but the Chicago newspaper that published it as well! <o:p> </o:p> Slanderous I tell you, just slanderous!  0.0.0.0
