200 5937 The New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies in game six of the 2009 World Series to become the World Champions once again.  The Yankees have won the World Series 27 times throughout the history of Baseball. The first time was in 1927, and the victory this year makes it 27. The Yankees, who because they have won the series, and appeared in the series 40 times, more then any other team in Major League Baseball, are also the most hated team outside of New York. <o:p> </o:p> They have been called the “Evil Empire” in reference to Darth Vader of Star Wars fame. However, the fact of the matter is that the Yankees have had more success and won more titles then any other baseball team in the history of the game. <o:p> </o:p> The next closest team is the St. Louis Cardinals with 10 World Series Championships in 17 appearances.  <o:p> </o:p> It was fitting that the Yankees took on last years Champion Phillies in this series, and in reality, the Phillies never had a chance. After losing the first game in New York 6-1 to the Phillies, the Yankees won three in a row of scores of 3-1, 8-5, and 7-4 to take a 3-1 series lead.  The Yanks lost game five by a score of 8-6 to bring the series back to the <st1:place w:st="on">Bronx</st1:place> for the final victory and the Championship. <o:p> </o:p> It is fitting that in the first year in New Yankees Stadium, the house that Ruth did not build, that the Yankees would win the World Series and begin a new era in Yankees baseball. <o:p> </o:p> In what just might be his last game in Yankee pinstripes, Hideki Matsui was the star of the game as he drove in six runs with 3 hits, and Andy Pettitte on only three days rest, stepped up his game and pitched well enough to eventually get the ball to Mariano Rivera. In addition, we all know, and the baseball world has come to learn that when Rivera comes into the game, you might as well just call it a game. It is lights out for the opposing team, especially with a 4-run lead.   <o:p> </o:p> With old Boston Red Sox foe Pedro Martinez on the mound for the Phillies, the Yankees ended their nine-year World Series title drought. As <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Martinez</st1:city></st1:place> took the mound, he was loudly serenaded by the Yankee fans with ringing chants of "Who's Your Daddy?" A leftover from the 2004 playoffs, only this time; the Yankees got the last laugh. <o:p> </o:p> Matsui, was named the World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP), and he deserved it. He hit a two-run homer, a two-run single, off of <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Martinez</st1:city></st1:place> to provide Pettitte with a nice lead. <o:p> </o:p> It was also fitting that Matsui and Alex Rodriguez, who do not have a World Series Title on their resumes, would both play major roles with their contributions both on the field and in the batters box in this year’s championship.   <o:p> </o:p> If you ask the Yankees players, this one above all else, was for owner George M. Steinbrenner, whose recently declining health has been no secret. He watched the first two games of the Series from his box seats at Yankee Stadium, but tonight’s game he was watching the celebration on television from his <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:city w:st="on">Tampa</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st="on">Fla.</st1:state></st1:place>, home. <o:p> </o:p> So once again, the Yankees are on top and the kings of the baseball world once again. <o:p> </o:p> Congratulations to the Yankees organization and to all of their loyal fans.  76.97.188.228
