Zenyatta the undefeated horse who roared to amazing come from behind victory at the Breeders Cup Classic in Novemeber 2009 will race again.

The announcement was made Saturday and she already has scores to settle.

On Tuesday, In a match race between Zenyatta and Racheal Alexander was voted “horse of the year” in the Eclipse Awards which are decided by members of the National Turf Writers' Association, the Daily Racing Form and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

Racheal Alexander won all eight of her 2009 races including a victory at the 2009 Preakness Stakes. She became the first filly to win that race since 1924.

Still this was a shock for Zenyatta fans after her amazing Breeders Cup Win in 2009.

It was the first ever by a female horse and came complete with a come frombehind victory that shocked the racing world. She was instantly the horse of the decade said her jockey. Horse of the millennium said fans.

Where to race next is now the question. There is talk of her being shipped to the United Kingdom to race at Ascot. The 10 million dollar Dubai World Cup for four year olds and up is another option. Both are likely to be vetoed by the Zenyatta's owners.

It is likely Zenyatta now racing as a 6 year old will remain where she always has: in Southern California. With that in mind the million dollar Santa Anita Handicap also known as the "Big Cap."

The move of Zenyatta's owners to unretire her is courageous. This is exactly the kind of move that thoroughbred horse racing needs. One of the problems for horse-racing is that once it has created a big star and a plot-line, the horse retires quickly.

It would be even better for the sport if Zenyatta was met at the "Big Cap" by Racheal Alexander who beat Zenyatta in close voting for “Horse of the Year” at the starting gate to decide the issue on the track.

The owners of both horses are open to the idea of matching the two undefeated horses in what would easily be race of the year and a great way for the “Sport of Kings” to start a new decade.

Another option for Zenyatta is the April 3rd Apple Blossom in Arkansas. In that race she would be likely to draw against Rachael Alexander.
</intro>

    <intro>
  She's beautiful, a big Hollywood celebrity, and her lucky number is 13. And like any starlet, she also apparently has a flair for the dramatic.

Just who is this intriguing lady?

None other than Zenyatta, the undefeated (13-0-0) racehorse whose participation in the Breeders’ Cup Classic was announced only days before the event.

Zenyatta’s handlers could have taken the easy route by putting her in Friday’s Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic. Undoubtedly, she would have been an overwhelming favorite to win that race again after having cruised to a dominant victory in 2008.

Instead, caution has been thrown to the wind, as Zenyatta now will be racing the boys.

Home-field advantage means something in every sport, and if ever a horse could claim home-field, it would be Zenyatta. She has spent most of her career in Southern California, and is more than familiar with the track at Santa Anita.

Zenyatta's size (approximately 1,200 pounds) will make her perhaps the biggest horse out of the gate on Saturday. But that will do little to help her because the boys will likely jostle her if she tries to take the inside route. So, to avoid getting mugged, Zenyatta will try to break away from the large field and head for the outside.

Once outside, Zenyatta will be best served sitting half-a-dozen lengths or so off the pace before closing hard on the final turn. Such a Phar Lap-esque style of running has become her signature move, as it worked perfectly for her in last year’s Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic.

Although Zenyatta's trainer, John Shirreffs, should cook up a clever gameplan for his lady, history will be working against him, as no filly or mare has ever won the Breeders' Cup Classic since the event was established in 1984.

Still, other than that history, there is no sound reason to bet against the talented 5-year old.

(Player Press Editors Note: Zenyatta has beaten the boys in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, running her record to 14-0. Zenyatta rallied from last place in the early going and fought off Gio Ponti down the stretch to win by a length Saturday at Santa Anita, beating a field of 11 males.)
<intro>
Who to pick in Saturday's big race.

Zenyatta is a dangerous horse and liable to finish in the as the name favorite is likely to be over betconsiderably. Still even Zenyatta has some drawbacks. She can be beaten. Don’t read to much into her workouts at this distance she could become gassed. Especially consider most of her 13 wins have been close. She will be the public favorite so if you do take her the odds will be low. It will be your job to beat her with a smart bet that will bring in more favorable odds.

Also bear in mind Zenyatta isn’t the only favorite. That’s because British bookmakers have their favorite son, Irish racehorse Rip Van Winkle as their favorite. This will be Van Winkle’s first time on the sythetics. The biggest question about him is that he has been plagued by foot problems overseas and it is hard to tell if this horse is ever 100%. If I’m going to give a horse my money, I want to be sure he’s going to be able to give it his all at post time. If you want to spend money on showy imports: save it for designer sunglasses and watches.

The true contender to Zenyatta is Summer Bird. The three year old who disappointed in the Kentucky Derby was last seen winning a Grade 1 race at Belmont by a length in October. We know Summer Bird ships well and has the best speed figures at this distance (1 and 1/4th Mile). Odds will be close on this surefire contender.

Quality Road also has a strong upside. He has faced strong competition before perhaps most famously when he upset Dunkirk in the Florid Derby. He has the highest speed ratings in this one. He can win on the dirt and is a horse you have to take seriously. He was second in his last race and third before that. Both of which were Grade 1 races at the distance of today’s race. Hard to find a knock against this horse.

    <intro>
Johnny Rottens first shot at writing a monarchial obituary didn't go so well. It has been over three decades since the (at the time) young and brash singer of the Sex Pistols made his premature proclamation " the Queen is dead!". Well, not quite so fast- the old silver fox is still alive and kicking (and employed.... sorry Mr. Rotten)- so here's your shot at redemption- we are witnessing a king die- the sport of kings. Horse racing is going the way of the dinosaur. Say it with me Johnny, the King is dead.

A bit of a manifesto. I discovered horse racing 18 months ago, and it has supported me financially since. I aim to introduce this floundering sport to a younger and wider audience. Regardless of the sports current state, and it's many flaws- it is still the best form of gambling. By far.
</intro>

    <intro>
The French beach town has been the site of three major battles in world history. Each time it looked like the victor of the war would be the vanquished at the battle. It just goes to show that you have to be willing to play the long shot. That’s never truer than when it comes to betting on the Kentucky Derby.

As the Run for the Roses prepares to commence for the 135th time the odds on favorite is I Want Revenge. The horse is carrying 3-1 odds and has practically been given the rose shaped horseshoe to wear while David Lanzman and company sip champagne. However, as those who served at Dunkirk can attest things don’t always go according to plan and when you have a field of 20 horses thundering around a track anything can happen.

At 13, I Want Revenge is close to the middle of the field while another favorite, Pioneer of the Nile is 16th. I Want Revenge will go to the head of the pack, so the positioning is in its favor. Pioneer may prefer to sit in the pack for a bit, so its post could also prove fortuitous. Of course all of that is predicated on traffic and the patterns of the other horses.

Dunkirk will post 15 and is drawing attention as the dark horse. So much so that odds currently stand at 4-1 for the son of Unbridled Son’s. Dunkirk placed at the Florida Derby and since there are no head to head comparisons to be made with Pioneer or Revenge it is hard to say how it matches up against these competitors.

Although Dunkirk is light on experience, only three races, it has two wins and a ton of talent. Pre race workouts have been so impressive that many started to pick Dunkirk to finish in the money. While most are seeing place or show, the talent displayed and the lack of intimate knowledge by the other riders could allow Dunkirk to take the whole enchilada.

The nature of this horse suggests upset possibility and a better payoff for those willing to wager. Playing the favorites is always a safe bet and at the Kentucky Derby it is downright boring. Just remember, the Germans would have put a ton of Deutsche Marks on their chances of winning WW2 after watching the British sail away from Dunkirk. I don’t have to tell you that they were wrong.

The Godolphin Stables also have two horses that could change the wagering in the 135th running of the Derby. Godolphin is owned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the Vice President of the United Arab Emirates and the Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. Maktoum embraces his Bedouin culture and heritage. Central to that lifestyle is a deep appreciation for horses. Godolphin is named after the Arabian strain of horses that is one of the triumvirates that makes up the modern thoroughbred. The Stable has two facilities; Al Quoz stables in Dubai and Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket, England. The mild weather in Dubai makes Al Quoz an excellent facility for year round training. Their impact in racing is international as they compete throughout the world.

Regal Ransom and Desert Party are their entrants in the Derby. In a head to head meeting at the UAE Dubai Derby Regal Ransom bested the stable mate and may be far better than the 30-1 odds being offered. Regal Ransom is posted 10th and Alan Garcia is the jockey aboard. In 2008, the two year old Regal Ransom brought home $675.000.00 for the Sheikh’s coffers. Garcia was the jockey when Regal Ransom got revenge for an earlier loss to his stable mate at the Dubai Derby.

Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor was impressed by the pairs Churchill Downs workout and proclaimed them fit, happy and ready to compete for the Derby crown.

While Desert Party brought home less money than his mate $425,000.00 is still a nice bundle of cash. Desert Party can run as his four and ¾ lengths win over Regal Ransom at UAE Guineas proved. Desert Party passed Regal Ransom at the final furlough. He was posted fourth at that race and will be 19th at the Derby. The Godolphin opinion is that Desert Party has a big heart and is highly competitive.

Having explosive power at the end could be a factor in the horse finishing in the money in Kentucky. Currently, Desert Party is on the board at 15-1. Although the odds are closer with Desert Party remember Regal Ransom bested him the last time they ran, so he has shown continuing progress in his campaign for the Triple Crown.

Chocolate Candy is a long shot that has been making quite a reputation on the west coast. In California Chocolate Candy won the California Derby in January, also tasted victory in the El Camino Real Derby and finished second at the tune up Santa Anita Derby. In his Churchill Downs workout Chocolate Candy trailed only stable mate Friesen Fire for the fastest time around the track. Chocolate Candy clocked in at :59 1/5 to Friesen Fire’s :57 4/5. Mike Smith is the jockey atop the 20-1 Chocolate Candy. His second place finish at Santa Anita saw Pioneer of the Nile claim the victory.

If Chocolate Candy has a weakness it is that he has run solely on synthetic surfaces. However, the fast workout time shows that the horse adjusts quickly to the track at Churchill Downs. Chocolate Candy may bring in some local faithful since he was bred in the Bluegrass State. He was produced from Seattle Slew mare Crownette. Chocolate Candy is posted in 11th and will be running from the middle of the pack in its maiden race on dirt. Trainer Jerry Hollander has been impressed with Chocolate Candy’s time on the Kentucky dirt and believes he is ready to make the move off of synthetic. If Chocolate Candy doesn’t melt under pressure he could generate some sweet returns on the tote board.

    <intro>
Kentucky Derby Roundup: Dunkirk meets his Dunkirk and Regal Ransom crashes a Desert Party in the UAE

A great weekend of horse racing from around the globe—from sandy Dubai to the Sunshine State of Florida—has had profound effects on shaping the 2009 Kentucky Derby.

For the groggy-eyed U.S fans who woke up early to catch the $2 Million UAE Derby, the result was mildly surprising. While Desert Party was expected to defeat Regal Ransom as he had a month prior, it was Regal Ransom who ruined the party by emerging victorious.

The horses are from the same stable and when they faced against each other in a February matchup again in Dubai, Desert Party won by five lengths.

Simon Crisford, who manages both horses for Godolphin, says both horses will be shipped to Kentucky on April 7. While both may qualify for the Kentucky Derby (due to the $2 million purse they contested in the UAE Derby), it is probable only one will actually start.

Some insiders think this will be Desert Party and not Regal Ransom. Desert Party had a less than ideal trip and based on his win in February over this same Regal Ransom, he may indeed be the better horse. In this scenario, one would expect to see Regal Ransom in the Preakness as a result.

Down in Florida this past weekend, a do-or-die situation for the lightly raced though undefeated Dunkirk in the Florida Derby. For Dunkirk, the Florida Derby turned out to be his well, Dunkirk. Dunkirk was edged by Quality Road down the stretch. Still it was only Dunkirk’s third race and he did show a great deal of élan that showed he is an elite three year old.

Still, his paltry $150,000 earnings make him a fringe Kentucky Derby candidate at best. The winner of the Kentucky Derby Challenge in England is guaranteed a spot at the derby and if that winner, Mafaaz, elects to do so then Dunkirk’s ship has truly sailed. In hindsight the owners of Dunkirk would have been advised to race their horse more or have entered him into an easier competition than the Florida Derby—say perhaps the Illinois Derby.

Based on his impressive win at the Louisiana Derby the consensus favorite for the Derby at this point is still Friesan Fire to be followed by which horse—Pampelmousse or PioneeroftheNile—wins the all important Santa Anita Derby this weekend. Then Quality Road’s quality win over Dunkirk should make him an in-the-money candidate for Churchill Downs in May.
</intro>
