<intro>
Another national signing day has come and gone, and look at the Southeastern Conference as once again coming out a winner, as the rich continue to get richer for the top league.

Florida had one of, if not the most profitable signing days of all time despite the uncertain status of head coach Urban Meyer. The burnt orange of Texas continues to be a popular choice (and rightfully so) with Mack Brown continuing to reel the recruits in like prized fish.

Alabama added another solid recruiting class to the group coming off its 13th national title ironically occurring one month to the day prior to this weekend's Super Bowl in Miami. The Crimson Tide, which won the national championship on the field (last time I checked a game was played and it simply wasn't voted on by computers alone), is the team to beat.

Arguably the most eyecatching performance of signing day was the performance of Gene Chizik and the Auburn Tigers, who snatched the nation's top running back from Arkansas. This adds even more spice to the nation's No. 1 college football rivalry, one which is talked about 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mark the Iron Bowl 2010 on your calendar right now. It still remains laughable how Pete Carroll possibly leaving USC was the top story on ESPN's PTI the day after Alabama won the national title. Lack of respect maybe?

Oklahoma had a down year due to injuries, particularly the one to quarterback Sam Bradford, but it did nothing to stop head coach Bob Stoops and his assistants from loading up the Sooner Schooner and racking up another strong class for the Crimson and Cream.

The SEC and Big 12 had very profitable days and are no doubt the top two conferences when it comes to the ability to lure players as well as their overall performance on the field. However, there is a significant gap between one and two, as the SEC had by many five of the top 10 recruiting classes, a group including LSU, Georgia and Tennessee.

Yes, the same Volunteer program spurned by coach Lane Kiffin, who jumped to Southern California because he couldn't stand the pressure. The same program denied by other coaches before finally finding its man and securing a pretty impressive class under the circumstances. This was definitely not a situation in which they were signing for Kiffin.

Remember this the next time you want to argue whether or not Boise State had any claim for a national championship. There was a simple solution by pitting the Broncos against Alabama for all the marbles, but of course it wasn't going to happen. The end result would've been the same as Cincinnati's chances against Florida. BSU barely beat TCU, and yes the Horned Frogs were an elite team, but not in the same class as UA, UF or UT.

The simple fact of the matter is, the top three teams in college football during 2009, Alabama, Florida and Texas, had the top three recruiting classes in 2010. Coincidence? It's for you to decide, but if Boise State had any legitimacy when it comes to being in the title picture, then the top-notch recruits would be knocking at its door. It didn't happen, and the success of the aforementioned teams as well as the Ohio States, Penn States and yes even the BYUs of the world, should make for interesting football banter down the road.
</intro>

    <intro>
To listen to the NFL experts this week, the Senior Bowl is the Tim Tebow Bowl. Just about every report out of Mobile is about Tebow. How Tebow looks in practice, his arm release, which team may pick him up in the draft, hell even about a commercial he is doing during the Super Bowl.

A reporter for the Atlanta Journal asked, why is Tebow disliked so much? Speaking as a fan of another SEC school, I don’t think it’s the public’s dislike of Tebow; it’s his overexposure by the media. Tebow is more overexposed then Greg Odom.

The kid can’t help it, he is Mr. College Football. From the beginning when two of the top teams in the SEC (Alabama and Florida) were after his services, he has become a media darling, but you can’t really blame him.

The media basically has forced him down our throats. Most of his games were televised on CBS or ESPN every weekend. Football analyst like Gary Danielson, acted as if they were going to have an orgasm every time they saw him play; he could do no wrong.

When he lost the SEC Championship Game, there was a sense of glee and relief around the country; the mighty Superman had gone down. There was a sense of “finally” we don’t have to hear about this kid any more. Speaking for myself, I like the kid, but it didn’t hurt my feelings to see him cry on the sideline. For once in a long time, he got to taste defeat and for a lot of us, we were glad.

It’s not like the kid never won anything. He had already won the Heisman, two national championships, and numerous SEC awards. Peyton Manning wasn’t this beloved when he came out of college.

The public, quite frankly, are tired of Tim Tebow. We are tired about hearing that he and wide receiver Riley Cooper were roommates. We are tired of hearing about his mission work. We are tired of hearing about his virginity. Hell, we can’t even escape him Super Bowl Sunday because he and his mom are doing an ad for Focus on the Family about choosing life.

I think we need positive role models in society, but my God, the kid is not super human; his Senior Bowl tryouts are proving that. But to hear the media talk, it’s like Tebow is the only guy playing Saturday and that’s what aggravates the rest of us and some media wonder why he is disliked?

I hope Tebow gets a chance to prove himself on the next level, but I also hope that the rest of the media backs off, gives him a break and give the rest of the country a break too. Superman needs a vacation and so do the rest of us.
</intro>

    <intro>
With all the negative stories surrounding college football these days (The Fraudulent BCS system, Coaches leaving, Recruiting violations) I thought I would actually write about something positive. That something positive is Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich.

Herzlich practiced last week with his Boston College teammates for the first time in almost a year. Although it was just off-season weight training and seven-on-seven drills in shorts and T-shirts, it was still inspirational.

Herzlich was the Atlantic Coast Conference defensive player of the year in 2008, intercepting six passes, which led the nation for linebackers. But in May 2009 he announced that he would miss the 2009 season after being diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer found in the bone or soft tissue. He finished radiation treatments in August and chemotherapy in November. Now he's back on the field with his teammates in January after doctors told him there are no lingering effects of the cancer or its treatment other than the hair loss that is now starting to grow back. He is being checked every three months just to be sure.

Herzlich returned to school in the fall while finishing up his treatments. He was even on the BC sideline during games and ran out of the tunnel with the team this past season. Before games he would accept novelty donation checks from opposing schools for his chosen charity, Uplifting Athletes, which works with college athletes to raise awareness of rare diseases. To date, he has raised about $200,000 for the charity.

Herzlich has heard from other athletes who survived cancer like Lance Armstrong and Jon Lester and he is eager to pass on encouragement to others who have been diagnosed with cancer. He has even spoken to families of kids with cancer who have written to him. He offers an autograph or words of encouragement to anyone who asks. He has also helped with recruiting and welcoming freshman to the BC campus. "I like this being part of me," Herzlich said. "It's something that's exciting, in that I get to be able to help other people."

"That's the kind of stuff that goes unnoticed, because it's not tackles and sacks," BC Coach Frank Spaziani said. "He's talked with guys, tried to work with them, tried to coach them. He's just a leader, and although he's not playing and participating, he's certainly doing a lot of that leadership on the field."

But Herzlich is hoping that he can make an even bigger contribution on the field in pads next season. Herzlich was an NFL prospect before the cancer and will be again if he stays cancer free in his senior year at BC. Right now he's just trying to get back into football shape. The risk of injury isn't from the cancer, it's from the lack of conditioning after a year out of the game.

BC Linebacker Mike Morrissey thinks his teammate will be just fine. "Never doubt Mark," Morrissey said. "He's a special player. He's NFL-bound, and I think it's going to be a great career for him."

Coach Spaziani isn't ready to pencil in Herzlich as a starter for the opener just yet, but he is hopeful. "He's working at it. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed," Spaziani said. In a sport dominated by greed of the BCS I think it's safe to assume that we all have our fingers crossed that a player like Mark Herzlich makes it all the way back.

    <intro>
     So, the Alabama Crimson Tide has been crowned NCAA Football's "championship" by virtue of their vicory over Texas, last night.

It's still difficult for me to call the winners of these computerized matchups "champions." In my mind, the only thing Alabama proved was that they can beat Texas without Colt McCoy.

     As matchups go,this wasn't one of the greatest bowl seasons in recent years. But anyone who saw that double-overtime thriller between Troy and Central Michigan would join the argument in favor of a playoff system.

     Just think, in the system I've been touting both Troy and Central Michigan would have been involved. Both teams are conference champions and Central Michigan ended the season in he Top 25.

     The same holds true for the defensive clash between Boise State and TCU. Two undefeated teams playing with the pride of champions. It's too bad this year's post season has come to it's conclusion. It should be getting interesting right about now.

     This Bowl season had some very good games. However, the majority of them were rather one-sided and only a couple of them went down to the wire.

     Still, the teams who would have made the post-season in my system either won their Bowl game or lost to another potential playoff team. There were two exceptions. West Virginia whose Gator Bowl loss to Florida State just happened to be in Bobby Bowden's farewell and East Carolina, who got dumped by a field-goal in overtime at the Liberty Bowl.

     But, for the most part, nearly all of them showed that they deserved to be in the championship conversation. Florida, Boise State, Ohio State and Iowa all have a right to say that they sould have had a chance at this season's National Championship. They were victorious in the four BCS Bowls.

      Can anyone prove otherwise?

     And BYU can't be ignored, either. Beating Oregon State is not a easy task but the Cougars trounced them in the Las Vegas Bowl. Central Michigan has a right to say that their status should be elevated.

     Even in losing efforts, TCU and Troy showed the hearts of champions. No team in the country could call either team unworthy of post-season bid in a true playoff format.

    Right now, Boise State should be gearing up for Ohio Stae, Florida should be watching BYU game film and Alabama should be trying to figure out what to do with Iowa.

     Chances are, Texas and Alabama would both still be around. but, I'm sure that the Longhorns would have been tested by Oregon State. And whose to say that Troy would have folded to in-state icon Alabama?

     The truth is, a playoff system would create a four game gauntlet that would seem almost impossible for any team to ovecome. Yet, one team would and that' the excitement generate by having eight major Bowls serve as the first round of my "Great Eight" playoff system.

     I must congratulate the Crimson Tide for last night's victory and their great season. In a playoff system, they would undoubtedly be a force.

     Their champioship status would be far more convincing if they had to run the table in that tough SEC schedule, beat Florida in the SEC Championsip, then followed it with wins over Troy, Iowa and Cincinnati before beating Texas or Boise State for a National Championship.

     And after playing Oregon State, the Longhorns may have had to deal with Florida and Boise State, before clashing with Alabama.

     To me, winning in the playoffs are the only way a team deserves to play in a real National Championship Game.

     I don't fault the Crison Tide. The current BCS system is to blame and although I'm not the only one with gripes, very few writers, broadcasters, politicians or anylists have a workable solution.

     The best thing college football fans could do is join forces. We should use the media and even solicit legislators and conference leaders to work on a solution that can be put in place by next season and have a real BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES.

     I plan to continue pumping my "Great Eight" system until I either turn blue or the BCS adopts my format. Check my complexion...blue is only a few shades away. But, I'm still trying.

     So, my question is would win between Boise State and Alabama. I have the Broncos by 5 1/2. But that opinion means exactly the same thing last month's Papa John's Bowl did...nothing!
</intro>

    <intro>
Lane Kiffin is back “home” at Southern California. Lane Kiffin has his “dream job”. Oh let the anticipation begin.

At age 34 Kiffin has nothing but anticipation on his side as a coach in the NFL or college. Now, at USC the anticipation will meet the outcome. We will find if the hype surrounding Lane Kiffin holds water.

Although the only time there was stability in his coaching career came at USC where he was the recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator under Pete Carroll, you cannot ignore his track record since then, being fired from the Oakland Raiders and leaving the Vols in just two years. This time, Lane Kiffin will not get fired after four games into his second year, as was the case in Oakland. There will be no more waffling from Lane this time. We will find out just what this baby faced brash coach is all about.

In Los Angeles football fans have only 1 team, USC. Right now USC is hot. It’s the talk of the town during football season, but let’s face it, LA does not need USC. Los Angelonians will find entertainment elsewhere if he shows his immaturity again like he did calling out the Florida Gators four minutes into the job at UT. In LA they will get bored with his antics fast if he talks the big game with silliness like he did at Tennessee. But yes, he said all the right clichés and did stay within himself at the introductory press conference but lets just see how he handles himself in the upcoming months leading up to next football season because the track record shows otherwise.

He already showed his ignorance at his first press conference stating,” They were upset at Tennessee when we left because we did well.” <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">No Lane</st1:address></st1:street>. They were upset because you embarrassed them when you made a fool out of the University when you called out the Gators. You humiliated them when you wrongly accused Urban Meyer of cheating. And now this. You escaped to “the greatest job in America” after one year of mediocrity, multiple secondary NCAA infractions, and inappropriate arrogance.

Lane Kiffin better grow up, and grow up fast. USC is a top 3 program in college football, and may be a top 3 football job, college or NFL. The USC coach does not need to say USC is on a pedestal. The USC coach just shows it with a confident demeanor, and not brashness.

Lane Kiffin should do what got him to USC in the first place…Oh wait, how did he get to USC?
<intro>
You've seen numbers 10-5 of the season's worst uniforms in college football. Now see the four worst!

4. Colorado Buffaloes

Yes, the regular uniforms are awesome. I like the logo personally, and the all black uniform is awesome.

But throwbacks usually fail big time, as proven with Ohio State among others, and is the case with Colorado.

These would be higher if not for the fact these aren't "actually" Colorado's uniforms.

But they are quite possibly the ugliest throwbacks I've ever seen. The helmets are just terrible, what is that black thing coming out of the facemask?

The jerseys look like baby food, and the pants do them no favors either. The shade of gray doesn't even match the helmets, and it really just tops off a disgusting uniform.

3.

Need I remind anybody of the garbage the two teams came up with at last year's matchup?

While no disrespect to the men and women of the Navy, but the uniforms are downright awful. You guys need to stop coming up with stuff like this for media attention.

The main thing wrong with this is the five different colors. The navy blue, the dark tan stripes, the red highlights, the beige numbers/ lettering, and then the white accents.

It does not go. Never have I seen a uniform with this many colors. And there's a reason. It's ugly.

Thank god the helmets are plain, who knows what would've gone up there...

2. Clemson Tigers

Orange never looks good on uniforms. Oregon State and Texas are the only ones who make it endurable to look at.

Clemson's just makes my eyes burn it's such an intense orange.

Clemson has a unique color combo with orange and purple, and sometimes they wear it well. Other times, as with the all orange, they don't.

The all purple doesn't look good either, but at least it isn't as bright.

Do I really even need to say anything else? The uniforms are just downright ugly.

Frankly I hate all orange uniforms, and Oregon State, Tennessee, and Syracuse could all have made the list.

And is it just me, or is it hard to look at football players as "tough" when they were things like orange and purple?

Still, this isn't even the worst orange uniform...

1. Virginia Tech Hokies

...Virginia Tech's are.

These things are as repulsive as they come.

Virginia Tech has a stylish logo, and some unique colors with maroon and dark orange. They probably could make something good out of it. But they botched the whole thing with these uniforms.

The orange jersey by itself is just ugly. The purple stripes are odd, and they look misplaced. Then the pants have their own little stripes going on, while mostly just pointing out the ugly jerseys because they're so dark.

It really doesn't get any worse than this.

Virginia Tech hasn't lived up to expectations this year, and they top it all off with the ugliest uniforms in college football. Better luck next year.

    <intro>
Lane Kiffin had enough of the vicious beast known as the Southeastern Conference.

The former Oakland Raiders coach whomade quite an impression at the University of Tennessee, left the Volunteers after only one season to take over at USC. He fills the void left by Pete Carroll, who did the opposite and is back in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.

The move couldn't come at a worse possible time for the Knoxville University, as National Signing Day is a mere 22 days away, and only a rash decision could have a replacement for Kiffin, whose father Monte will go along for the ride as well as another assistant and recruiting coordinator in Ed Orgeron.

There is an interesting name out there in Mike Leach, who was reportedly in the mix one year ago before the Vols went with Tiffin. The UT brass needs to go grab Leach while they can and reap the rewards from the recruiting he could bring to Knoxville.

As far as Kiffin is concerned, he enters the city of Angels to lead a program which could soon be in trouble with the NCAA should it ever make a decision on the Reggie Bush situation as well as wrong doing on the part of former coach Tim Floyd with the basketball program. Kiffin shouldn't have a problem recruiting talent, as after all, it is USC, and he will test his wits in a much easier Pac-10 than the conference he left.

Tennessee finished 7-6 after a 37-14 shellacking at the hands of Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl but was a mere 10 points away from possibly finishing 10-3 after four-point losses to UCLA and Auburn and an emotional two-point defeat to Alabama after two field goals were blocked.

The Vols also played Florida much closer than most expected and lost by only 10, so Kiffin did an admirable job after the program began to deteriorate under former coach Phil Fulmer, who overstayed his welcome. Kiffin was also able to back up his brashness of the offseason after sometimes speaking too soon, and his minor violations wouldn't even be noticed at USC.

Kiffin seems to be a man who relishes the limelight, and Tinsel Town is just the place for him to establish a new identity, a vastly different one than he left in northern California. He has ties to the Trojans, so one can't really blame him for making the move.

As an assistant at USC from 2001-06, including a stint as offensive coordinator in his final two seasons, Kiffin has a young guy to build around in starting quarterback Matt Barkley.

Tennessee gets the raw end of the deal for now, but the Vols could still come out of this winners depending upon who they bring in to lead the way. They must have someone strong, particularly on the recruiting end, as there are new kids he and his staff must sway to Knoxville and others who have already verbally committed they must try and prevent from going elsewhere.

It only remains to be seen whether it's USC or Tennessee coming out of this as the winner. Kiffin begins a new adventure out west, and the Vols must act now and act quick when it comes to filling the void. Relax UT fans, there shouldn't be a short list of viable candidates.
</intro>

    <intro>
After only one year as the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, Lane Kiffin has decided to leave for the sunny skies, beaches, and soon- to-be on probation USC Trojans.

Apparently, according to some reports, he best get going tonight, because it sounds like he won’t be allowed to even come back and get the rest of his stuff. Vols fans are pretty upset with this development.

Kiffin ran his head about other programs, bragged about his upcoming recruiting class, and had players on his team who got arrested. Now, he is gone.

I don’t know who got the worse end of this; Tennessee or USC? All I know is Kiffin basically pissed on the Big Orange, their fans, and dreams of returning them to the SEC Championship. In short, what he did was crappy.

He not only left UT, but he left UT in a bad spot with three weeks to go before National Signing Day. Now, where do the Vols turn? Tennessee is a good job and has a lot of good recruits coming in, but who do you bring in to stop the bleeding in a hurry?

Mike Leach who is crazy a bed bug, David Cutcliffe who to me would be a stepped down because he really hasn’t proven anything if he doesn’t have a Manning playing quarterback or do you go outside the box again? I bet Tommy Tuberville is somewhere saying “Damn, if I had just waited one more day.”

USC is getting a guy who basically fits them perfectly; he is a USC guy, coached under Pete Carroll, can recruit, and doesn’t mind breaking the rules in the process; perfect match.

UT fans in the end probably should be happy he is gone, because he is was one or two steps away from getting the Vols on probation while managing to piss off the whole SEC. But it can’t be fun to realize that the man whom Vol fans had their team on their way back and had given them back to a certain extent their swagger, has left them at the alter for another school.

Vol fans instead of crying, should all rejoice and say GOOD RIDDANCE!
</intro>

    <intro>
The Seattle Seahawks will officially name Pete Carroll their new head coach on Tuesday. But I can't help thinking that Carroll's sudden move to the Seattle has more to do with USC's recent troubles than his desire to return to the NFL.

Southern Cal's football program has been under investigation for illegal contributions allegedly made to former player Reggie Bush for quite some time. Add to that the questions surrounding running back Joe McNight's use of an SUV not registered to him. McNight was held out of the Emerald Bowl recently, leading me to believe their may be some truth to the rumors of illegal contributions to him. Perhaps McNight didn't play for fear that USC would have to forfeit the game at a later point in time.

The NCAA is said to be getting close to making a ruling on the Reggie Bush situation . Add to that the fact that Southern Cal recently sanctioned their own basketball team for violations concerning O.J. Mayo. Those sanctions included a ban from post season play and a loss of some scholarships. I believe that Carroll could read the writing on the wall. The NCAA is likely to crack down on the USC program sometime soon. If not there is a better chance that the university will impose it's own sanctions to pacify the NCAA investigators.

Rather than stick around and face the music Carroll made a hasty retreat to the NFL. And where does that leave all the kids who signed on to play 4 years of football for Carroll? It bothers me that coaches can ruin collegiate football programs and skate out the back door as they sign their names on multi- million dollar contracts to coach elsewhere. Maybe Carroll didn't know about the alleged contributions to his players, and maybe he did. But if it happened it happened on his watch. He owes it to the university that pays his salary and the players who win his games for him to make sure it doesn't happen.

Whether he was compliant in the alleged payments made to his players or just sloppy in his oversight of his program he should have to be accountable in some way if any of the allegations are proven to be true. Instead he will be laughing it up at his press conference on Tuesday as he accepts his new position in Seattle. Carroll isn't the first coach to be in this position nor will he be the last, and how much he really knew about payments to star players will likely remain a mystery. But if sanctions are handed down I sure would like to see someone pay the penalty other than the players who played by the rules didn't receive illegal compensation.
</intro>
