<intro>
For millions of people around the world, the most irritating sound known to man is that 7:30AM alarm clock tune that might sing, "Take me down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty"- but for whatever reason, you just hear, "its time for you to get your butt up and start your miserable day sending emails, filling water coolers, meeting for 3 hours in uncomfortable chairs and getting yelled at for missing cover sheets on your TPS reports".

Yet there is a small population who wake up to the same exact alarm clock tune, but instead hear, "Its time for your 12 million dollar a year ass to get up and shoot some hoops, or catch some footballs or hit the batting cage".

Pro athletes were born with a gift, and that gift allows them to play a sport for a career as opposed to sit in an office behind a phone and a backed up computer that moves slower than a backup catcher running the bases, a career that does not force you to work til your 64 years old, and a career that allows you to make more money in a year than anyone could possibly dream of making in a lifetime. But for years, these athletes continue to take what they have for granted, make outrageous mistakes and flush it all down the toilet in a blink of an eye, or a pull of the trigger, or a shot from a syringe. It's beyond comprehensible some of the actions pro athletes tend to take, and whats even more absurd is their reaction after its plastered all over ESPN. I'm going to touch upon a few examples, and you can ask yourself, "Are you smarter than a pro athlete". The answer 178 times out of 179 is yes, you are more intelligent although that apparently doesn't say much at all.

The most recent genious currently plays for the Washington Wizards. Professor GIlbert Arenas, who just a few short years ago signed a contract that would pay him a total of $111 million dollars, brought multiple guns into the arena (his workplace) and kept them in his locker ( his office). His excuse for what he needed them for is irrelevant. To put that into context, if I walked into my office today with multiple pistols, chances are I would be fired before I could finish my first cup of coffee, the cup of coffee that helps me get through my miserable day emailing and listening to people complain about how their not satisfied with the service we provide them. Now, Genious Arenas is up for felony charges, and is in jeopardy of his contract becoming void because he violated a morality clause. Congratualtions Gilbert, your at the top your class.

Lets go back a decade and visit one of my favorite athletes of my generation, rocket scientist Latrell Sprewell. He wakes up every day, and goes to work AKA a beautiful sports arena in the Bay Area where he gets to play basketball for a living, not to mention make millions of dollars doing so. During practice one day, his coach PJ Carlesimo (his boss) has gotten under Latrell's skin a bit, and told him his passes were not crisp enough. Normal average person response/reaction to criticism: work on passing, ignore the tediousness of the coach's criticism and try and make him happy while possibly improving your game in the process. Latrell Sprewell's response/reaction: use your Andre the Giant sized hands and grab coach and choke him. Shockingly, Spree was suspended a full year from basketball (his job). Again, in real people terms- If i choked out my boss after he told me the coffee I made for him needed more sugar, I'd be searching Craig's list by now for an unpaid internship, anywhere.

Sidenote: My favorite athlete comment of all time comes from Spree after the Timberwolves decided not to offer the 30 something year old a larger contract- "9 million dollars a year? Cmon man I got a family to feed". Can't make this stuff up.

How bout Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson throwing haymakers and uppercuts to fans in the crowd... mid game! How bout hitting 73 home-runs after never hitting more than 50, transforming your body from Chris Rock's figure to The Rock's figure, and all of this in the middle of an era where hundreds of players have been caught using steroids.... while sticking to the claim that you did not know what you were taking. And no, i'm not talking about Brady Anderson. Are you smarter than Barry Bonds? Most likely.

How about that guy Tiger Woods. How is it possible he didn't think he would get caught sleeping around with all these classy ladies? The guy can't even take a dump without having to fend off cameras. Guess you have to give the guy some credit, he got away with it for this long... but still, did he think he could go the rest of his life without at least one story of his wild sex life leaking out? At least he didnt sexually harrass anyone. [I think the smartest athlete of this era is Kobe Bryant- he sexually harrassed a girl and paid her off to shut her mouth- Brilliant!] Doctor Woods clearly had a plan, and his plan was to wing it, just like he does when he has to hit a ball out from under 8 trees. Except on the course, Tiger can use his 7 iron. In the real world, he needs his brain...too bad- So in conclusion, yes, you are probably smarter than Tiger Woods.

One of my favorites is Nobel Prize winner Plaxico Burress. Gotta feel bad for Plax, right? Poor guy shoots himself and ends up in jail for 2 years. Maybe next time he should register that gun (or obviously lock it up, OR not wear sweatpants to a club, OR wear tighter pants if your going to carry around a weapon OR not bring it to the club at all, OR..any more suggestions for this witty fellow?) before he puts his contract, his life, and everyone else around him in danger of being shot in the leg, or chest for that matter. Ohh and I completely forgot about that warm ,gentle and caring Michael Vick character. What a sweetheart this guy is. Hmmm... I make millions and millions of dollars, and I've never won anywhere! I'm already getting away with legal robbery! All I have to do to make a living is take a hike (not literally, although thats what the Atlanta Falcons, the NFL and the law made him do) and run with the stupid football and I get paid serious cash, not to mention being the only quarterback in any Madden game that allows you to dominate without throwing the ball. But as Mike Vick I get bored of all that... hey here's an idea- lets kill dogs and make a UFC league for them so I can get paid a few extra hundred thousand. I can just see Mike Vick at a dog fighting press conference- "hey guys I don't do this for the money, I do it for the love of the game". Brilliant! After about 2 years in a luxurious federal prison resort, Vick is back in the NFL. If I killed animals for money, and asked for my job back after my prison sentence, chances are the boss would say the position was filled. Permanantly. By a slightly feminine vegetarian named Norman who has a lovely wife named Rose, and 2 kids named Margaret and Harold.

We can talk about the intelligence of some of these athletes all day, from OJ to Iron Mike- guys who think their James Bond and live by the "The world is not enough" motto or the notion that they are untouchable. It's as if God gave everyone a strength and a weakness. The strength being born so athletically talented that you only have to work (I use that term loosley) for 20 years while having the ability to make more paper than 99% of the world. And the weakness of making you the dumbest, least sensible one in the room- unless that room is a lockeroom.

Bottom line... chances are you ARE smarter than a pro athlete and for all you toddlers out there, that goes for you too. Stay in school.
</intro>

    <intro>
Boston, Massachusetts is the city of the decade thanks to the success of their various sports franchises

Boston sports fans, we’ve been spoiled. We have to admit it, because it’s undeniable.

For a city steeped in history, for years it was all a sports fan could talk about as the 2000’s got underway. The last championship was the 1985-86 Boston Celtics. After that, it was a short list of “almosts.”

The New England Patriots had two Super Bowl trips end in failure. And a chance for the Red Sox’s first World Series since 1918 began unraveling when a grounder rolled through the legs of first baseman Bill Buckner in game six. Blame it on The Curse of the Bambino.

With nothing new to be proud of recently, we recycled stories of Larry Bird, Bobby Orr, and Ted Williams. Bostonians appreciated the greatness displayed by the legends, but at the same time were depressed by the memories because the modern day teams always let the fans down.

So when a team finally broke through, we were in disbelief. We didn’t believe we’d celebrate another title in our lifetime.

The Patriots broke through first, under the unlikeliest set of circumstances. With franchise QB Drew Bledsoe injured in the second game of the season, Tom Brady, the 199th player selected in the 2000 NFL Draft, quickly took command of the offense and the team rallied around the second year signal caller.

The stars aligned time after time for New England. Wide receiver Fred Coleman, with two career receptions, had the biggest catch of his life – a 46-yard catch and run in a December win over the New York Jets. WR David Patten fumbled the ball along the sideline but fortunately made contact with the ball and the sideline (ruled out bounds) as he fell down unconscious. “The Tuck Rule” preceded the greatest kick in NFL history by Adam Vinatieri as he knuckled a 45-yard field goal to force overtime. And in the extra frame, New England drove the ball for a short game-winning field goal. Snow angels for everyone! Love, Lonnie Paxton.

With everything going the Patriots’ way, it’s not totally surprising they drove 53 yards in 1:30 to set up the winning 48-yard field goal. And just like that, 41 years of disappointment stepped aside for the establishment of a standard of excellence: The Patriot Way.

As the Patriots evolved into a machine-like organization, the Red Sox devolved into a loose and fun-loving group of personalities. Starting pitcher Pedro Martinez, while focused and intense on the mound, was like a little kid off of it, joking with teammates and the media. Left fielder Manny Ramirez arrived later and became the symbol of aloofness as his living for the moment approach became Manny Being Manny.

The Sox came close, but couldn’t get past the hated New York Yankees. The newest chapter to Boston’s post season disappointments happened in 2003 when manager Grady Little left an obviously tired Pedro Martinez on the mound with the Red Sox ahead of the Yanks, 5-2. By the time the inning was over, New York tied the game. And in the eleventh inning, a twist was added to Boston’s vernacular. Bucky “Bleepin’” Dent was updated to Aaron “Bleepin’” Boone, after the latter hit the game-winning homerun. The Bambino did it again.

During his tenure with the Sox, Martinez was asked about the Curse of the Bambino. He declared if Ruth’s apparition stepped into the batter’s box, he would, “hit him in the ass.” Pedro didn’t get the chance to plunk the ghost haunting the Sox, but he did the next best thing.

In the ALCS rematch the following year, Pedro buzzed New York’s Hideki Matsui who was hitting like the Babe. After Martinez played ghost hunter and headhunter simultaneously, Matsui and the Yanks were spooked at the plate from that point on.

And the Sox couldn’t do wrong. Dave Roberts was going to steal second in game five. Everyone knew it, and he still did it. Curt Schilling made a bloody sock fashionable as he reinforced his reputation as a clutch playoff pitcher. Alex Rodriguez became a Photoshop legend with his slap of Bronson Arroyo’s glove.

The metaphoric ball kept rolling for the Red Sox from game four of the ALCS through game four of the World Series as Boston swept the St. Louis Cardinals. Curse Reversed.

Whether it was a curse or not, the Celtics certainly felt like they were. The deaths of Len Bias and Reggie Lewis set the franchise back and caused immeasurable damage to the future.

And the string of bad luck continued through the worst record in the league in 1997, the hiring of Rick Pitino, and losing the NBA Lottery with two shots to win it. By the time Pitino said Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish were not walking through the door, Slick Rick was ready to walk out that door.

Danny Ainge, a member of past Celtics Championship teams with Bird, McHale, and Parish, did walk through that door as the President of Basketball Operations and aimed to assemble a modern day Big Three. He did it when he acquired shooting guard Ray Allen and power forward Kevin Garnett in separate trades. With Pierce already in place, the core was united.

Team chemistry didn’t completely come together until the playoffs. Boston survived two seven game series against Atlanta and Cleveland by winning all home games. The highlight was the Paul Pierce-LeBron James duel. The King won in the box score with 45 points, but the Celts won the game and the series, led by The Truth’s 41 points.

The baptism by fire hardened the Celts for the Eastern Conference Finals and NBA Finals. When the Celtics staged a game four comeback win after being down by 24 points to the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston was on the cusp of the long awaited championship.

They didn’t claim the title until June 17th, which was serendipitous: on 6/17, in game 6, the Celtics won their 17th Championship.

What city is ever lucky enough to celebrate three Championships with three different teams? If a Boston fan was told in 2000 that they would see the Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics win titles in the decade, they’d ask who made the deal with the Devil and ask if they could sign the contract too.

Never in our wildest dreams did we think the Pats would go from laughingstock to the class of the league with three titles in four years. Or that after breaking a 86-year Curse the Red Sox would wait just three years for a second World Series sweep.

If winning is contagious, then it spread to the college ranks. Boston University and Boston College won the last two NCAA Hockey Championships. BC also won in 2001.

Other franchises got close. The New England Revolution made four MLS Cup appearances, including three in a row. And the Boston Bruins won four division titles.

That’s 14 Championship appearances, nine Championships, and countless playoff appearances. The next 10 years might get off to a good start with the Pats, Celtics, Bruins, and Sox as legitimate contenders, possibly for years to come. But it’s going to be very hard for the next 10 years to be as good as the last 10.

Soak it in Boston fans. It’s been a heck of a ride.

    <intro>
Many sports fans either remember or heard of the Muhammad Ali/Sonny Liston boxing match in which Ali scored a knockout with the infamous “Phantom Punch”. That fight took place on may 25, 1965 at what was then known as the Central Maine Youth Center (CMYC) in my hometown of Lewiston, Maine. My dad recounts the story of a buddy of his paying $100 a seat to see the fight. Dad's friend said he was so excited to see the match in which my dad replied that the fight was already over.

Many other events have happened during the winter months on that site in Lewiston that has great significance for the sports fans of our area. I will attempt to give an overview of some events. My main source of information comes from an article written for our local newspaper the Sun Journal written by Mr. David A.Sargent, a freelance writer from Auburn, Maine.

The first arena at the site, Saint Dominic's Arena (St. Dom's for short), commenced building in the late 1940's and was completed in 1951, as an ice plant was installed ushering indoor hockey to Lewiston. A great place to meet for the rabid hockey fans of the area. The arena was financed in part by Boston Celtics founder and Boston Garden manager Walter Brown. Local club teams and high school hockey filled the arena with powerhouse St.Dom's High School leading the way, as well as Lewiston High School.

In the mid – 1950's a portable hardwood floor was added and hosted several events, including Boston Celtics exhibition games. The floor was reported to have been the world's largest at that time by roughly 100 square feet. Unfortunately, fire totaled the building in November of 1956.

A second building was erected and finished in 1958 and was dedicated on January 17, 1959. This arena was named the Central Maine Youth Center (CMYC). Again, the main attraction was hockey although basketball was also played there. Also in later years, there were concerts, trade shows and boxing cards held there.

Some of the hockey teams that played there were the L-A Twins (Lewiston – Auburn) in the 1960's and from 1973 to 1977 the Maine Nordiques, the main minor league affiliate for the World Hockey League's Quebec Nordiques. In fact, if you saw the movie Slap Shot, at least one former Nordiques member, Guido Tenisi, was in the movie as the player with the two gorgeous blond babes at his side.

Today, with much refurbishment, the arena called the Androscoggin Bank Colisee' is the home of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's (QMJHL) Lewiston Maineiacs. Of course, high school hockey is still a big draw with powerhouses St. Dom's and Lewiston leading the way as well as other local teams and youth hockey as the Lions' Tournament is held at the Colisee' annually.

I hope that I have given you a taste of a small part of the sports history of the city I call home, Lewiston, Maine. If you have something to share about your area sports, feel free to comment or email me. I would be more than happy to share your experiences.
<intro>
I missed The Express when it was in theatres in 2008.

There's a story there about how I was in the time machine, and missed most of 2008. A story for another time. So I was not going to miss it today, even if it meant taking a couple hours out of what is a beautiful beach day.

Instead, I chose to watch The Express on HBO, and do not regret the use of my time at all. The movie is an inspirational movie based on the true story of Ernie Davis. Davis was the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy while playing football at Syracuse University. But like any good sports movie, the story is about so much more than sports. It captures a time in American History when we did not live under the premise that all men are created equal, and makes you wonder about ways in which inequality still exists in the US.

Rob Brown (imdb link) plays the role of Ernie Davis. Brown played football at Amherst College, giving realism to the football scenes. Dennis Quaid is fantastic as the coach at Syracuse. Quaid has been in other sports movies, including my favorite, The Rookie (for more, see my article Everyone's Going To The Movies). One of my favorite parts of the movie is how the coach uses legend Jim Brown to help recruit Davis out of High School, then uses the same tactic using Davis to recruit his own replacement, Floyd Little. Davis hands Little a bottle and makes a point about how the bottle does not have any labels. He tells him that he never set out to be the greatest "negro" running back, just the greatest running back. The bottle also has great symbolism from an early scene in the movie where Davis is collecting bottles outside Pittsburgh, and his speed helps him escape.

Of course, it's based on a true story. Did the events actually happen that way? Nobody knows. I had a professor at BC who said "all stories are true, some of them actually happened". There are some comments in Wikipedia that some of the events in the movie around the 1960 Cotton Bowl may have been different in real life. (Wikipedia's articles on Davis and The Express) But this should not matter, because the truth is in the story, and sometimes that is more important than accuracy.

Sure, HBO on demand would have been good right about now, and I could have had the best of both worlds. But the movie finished. It was still a beautiful day. I went down the stairs, crossed the beach and swam into the bay, wondering ways I could change the world.
</intro>

    <intro>
That's what my friend Bill Shakespeare said. At least it was a quote from Romeo.

Now I'm not talking about made-up names, like "Ocho-Cinco". Or one of my favorites from the XFL "He Hate Me". Very creative, but just not this topic. I'm talking about real names, not stage names like Jon Sterling. And this is not about the great nicknames, like the Splendid Splinter, the Yankee Clipper, or the Say "Hey" Kid. Maybe another article, another time. This is about real names.

It started when I was talking about the AFC East, I wrote a comment about Tony Soprano here. Then Kerri told me that she could root for the Dolphins based on the name of the head coach. This will of course not make for marital bliss, but I still have not successfully explained how a team can have a 1/2 game lead. So there still are things to be decided before we are officially married.

In case you didn't check the link, my joke about Tony Soprano was "Tony Soprano is the coach after a succesful run on HBO, and winning coach of the year last season." This is borrowing from my own joke from 2004 when Mike Myers pitched for the Red Sox. I would often follow it up with the line "I just loved him in The Cat in the Hat". I never even mentioned the Halloween series.

The 2004 Red Sox also had Bill Mueller, pronounced Miller, no relation to Bill Miller the umpire. I am not sure if Bill Miller ever called Bill Mueller out on strikes, but he probably did. Mueller's teammate was Kevin Millar. And in 2005 the Sox picked up Wade Miller, giving them the trophy for most players with a variation on how to spell Miller.

The Sox also have a history on players that share names with cities and towns in the Boston area, including a couple of current Sox. Lowell, MA is a mill town north of Boston. To increase tourism, they created a song "There's a lot to like about Lowell". Surprisingly, Sox fans did not start singing the song as Mike Lowell won the 2007 World Series MVP. Wakefield is a nice suburb, nothing extra special, but it kind of matches what you get out of a dependable pitcher Tim Wakefield.

Going back into the Sox history, they had Carl Everett, and traded Adam Everett to get him. There is no truth to the rumor that talks for the trade were in Everett, MA. Lynn, MA has the famous rhyme: "Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you never go out the way you came in." Fred Lynn was one of the Gold Dust Twins along with Jim Rice back in the 1970s.

One final point, perhaps you noticed a change in my real name. A new name, new start, new place to live. New identity. It's in the Bible, Genesis and the New Testament. And besides, Bill told me that a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.
